Shane Foster, President, Barstow Global Online
In mid-March, The Barstow School went straight from spring break to completely online classrooms — without missing a day of school. How did we do it? We had a map, created by years of planning, preparation and experience delivering online education. That brought us here, to Barstow Global Online.
Like millions of families, the last quarter of the 2019-2020 school year might be your first experience with online learning, and maybe your school's methods don't meet your expectations. Maybe online school is something you had already been considering because it fits the way your student wants or needs to learn. Either way,  this could be the right time to make a change.
Here are four things to know about Barstow Global Online (BGO) — education delivered differently with the right courses, pace and place for every kind of student.
Freedom. Flexibility. Focus.
You're probably hearing a lot about synchronous versus asynchronous learning right now. Simply put, synchronous learning means your student goes to class at a specified time and has interaction with a teacher and classmates learning together. It's real time. Asynchronous learning means a students chooses when to go to class, reviewing materials prepared by a teacher and completing and turning in assignments for assessment. It's time independent.
BGO blends these two models together in a way that bests fits the individual students. Since we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, we can work with your student to find the best individualized fit.
Quality Academics
We're not new to this. The Barstow School has been a recognized educational innovator since Mary Louise Barstow came to Kansas City from Wellesley College in 1884 with a bold directive: to open a progressive and rigorous college preparatory school for young women. Sound scholarship was, and remains, part of our mission statement.
From preschool through grade 12, our faculty builds curriculum that goes beyond teaching core competencies. We're an independent school, so we set our own high standards. Teachers provide learning opportunities that capitalize on each student's unique talents and interests. Learning is project-based and competency-based, ensuring students master skills as they progress to the next level of learning. This is an important part of a Barstow education that we now bring to BGO.
Proven. Accredited. Respected.
Our curriculum meets a high standard of excellence. Our graduates are accepted to the best colleges and universities in the country. A Barstow degree is recognized around the world.
Accreditation is awarded through self-study, data, feedback from members of the school community, and independent evaluation. Barstow is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS, the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS), and Accreditation International.
Responsive to Immediate Needs and Long-Term Goals
Campus closures caused by COVID-19 have posed many challenges for schools, students and families. One of those challenges is the loss of fourth quarter learning at schools that didn't have systems in place for — or the ability to be nimble during — the switch to online learning. Not only did The Barstow School shift without our students missing a single day of classes after spring break, we also recognized other students would have an immediate need for enriching material during the summer to fill in learning gaps.
Summer Immersion sessions are open for registration. Your student in preschool-grade 11 can register for a three-week session of learning and receive the content they need to begin the next school year at an affordable price. Long-term, students can enroll in BGO year-round to continue to receive the best in online education. Contact us for more information, and we'll help you get started.
We look forward to welcoming you to Barstow Global Academy. Whether you're with us for three weeks, or throughout your educational journey, we think you'll agree this is quality education delivered differently
